Advertising on Youtube

Video is a huge part of our daily lives. Think about the last time you let a day go by without watching some type of video — on television or the Internet.
People aren’t just watching funny cat videos, either. Many businesses are harnessing the power of video to drive awareness and sales.
Because Google owns YouTube, video ads on YouTube are handled through AdWords. And they’re surprisingly easy to use. Here’s how your business can get started with YouTube ads.

Decide On Your Campaign Goals

Don’t just jump on the video ad bandwagon because everyone else is doing it. Think about what you’d like to get out of it. Do you have a complicated product or service that’s more easily explained with video than with text? Are you launching a new product and want to generate awareness? Are you hoping to drive sales via video?
Video ads can work for all of the above scenarios, but as with any paid search campaign, a little advance planning will help make your campaign a success.

Learn the Basics

YouTube ads run on a cost-per-view basis, not cost-per-click. While you can and should drive traffic via YouTube ads, you’re charged every time someone watches your video for a minimum amount of time — usually 25 percent of the video length.
In many ways, therefore, YouTube is a branding or awareness exercise, rather than a direct-response medium. You can certainly drive leads or sales from YouTube, but you’ll pay whether or not the viewer ever reaches your website.
That’s not to say that YouTube won’t drive conversions, but your success metrics may be different than for regular PPC campaigns.

Targeting

One nice feature of YouTube ads is targeting options. Targeting for YouTube is similar to the Google Display Network. You can target by interest, topics, keywords, demographic characteristics like age and gender, or a combination of these. Remember, YouTube has a huge audience. You’ll want to narrow down your audience choices. Think about who you’d like to see your ad, and target accordingly. But be aware that keyword targeting can severely limit your ad’s reach.

Where the Ads Appear

YouTube ads appear on YouTube. But they also appear on sites in the Google Display Network. That’s because YouTube ads have three formats: in-stream, in-display, and in-search.

Set Up your Targets

A traditional pay-per-click campaign is organized by campaigns, ad groups, ads, and keywords. Ads are assigned to an ad group, and are triggered by any of the keywords in that group.
The YouTube campaign structure is a different. YouTube has campaigns, ads, videos, and targets. Campaigns are essentially the same as traditional PPC ads — this is where you’ll set geography, daily budgets, and such.
Videos are simply the videos you’re promoting. A single video can be assigned to multiple campaigns.
Ads couple your video with ad copy. Ad copy is basically the same as traditional PPC, with a headline, description, display URL, and destination URL.
Targets are the confusing part. You can target by interest, topics, keywords, demographic characteristics like age and gender, or a combination of any or all of these. Within a campaign, you’ll combine targets, ads, and videos to create what viewers will see.

You can trigger your ad via all targeting groups in a campaign, or only some of them. Experiment with different targeting options to see what works best.

Think About your Landing Page

With YouTube ads, you can send visitors to your YouTube channel page or to a landing page on your website. This is where your goals come into play. If you are trying to build awareness and grow your YouTube subscriber list, then sending visitors to your YouTube channel makes sense.
But if you’re going for lead generation, you’ll want to send visitors to an optimized page on your website, where they can complete a conversion.
The nice thing about YouTube ads is that while not everyone will click through or even watch the entire video, you’ve still gained exposure to your brand via the ads.

Once you’ve added a video to an AdWords campaign, you have the option of creating a video overlay. This is a block of text that displays over your video every time someone views it. Clicks on video overlays are free.
Video overlays are created within YouTube, not AdWords. Log in to your YouTube account and navigate to your YouTube channel. Find the Video Manager in the dashboard.

Facebook Privacy: Users Should Check These Settings as New Changes Roll Out

What’s disappearing? The social network announced in December that it was retiring the option for users to control whether they show up when others type their name into the search bar, but said Thursday that it would finally be notifying those who use it that the setting will be removed. The option, which shows up in privacy settings as “Who can look up your timeline by name?” was already cut for people who weren’t using it. 

How was that setting useful? It wasn’t perfect. It would not have stopped, for example, Facebook users from being able to access those protected profiles if those users had been tagged in a public post or picture. Still, it did help those users to keep a lower profile on the social network, such as those trying to hide their profiles from abusive ex-partners or harassment.
 For those who chose that option— a “small percentage” of its users, Facebook says -- the change now allows anyone to type those names into Facebook’s search engines to see their profiles. 

Can I replicate that option with other tools?: No. The main feature of the setting was that people wouldn’t be able to find a user by name in the search bar. There appears to be no way to keep that function. But there are still some setting that can lower a profile on the site.

Facebook is trying to encourage people to control their privacy on an item-by-item basis. So, whenever and however you post, you should be checking to see if what you’re putting up is for public view or just for friends or specific lists of friends. Also, consider turning on Timeline approval, which shows you what your friends may be posting about your location or whom you’re with. You can ask them to remove your name from those posts. Facebook has settings that let you review posts and photo tags before they’re posted to your Timeline. If privacy is a major concern, use these tools and don’t hesitate to ask other users to remove posts about you that make you uncomfortable.

It’s also a good idea to create group lists of friends so that you can share some posts exclusively with certain lists and exclude other groups from seeing those posts. That’s particularly important if you spend a lot of time on Facebook’s mobile app, where privacy tools can be harder to finesse. 

What else can I do for privacy? Another key option in the privacy settings menu is one lets users disable your search engines from linking to their timelines. That will at least cut down on the chance that someone looking for you outside the social network will be able to find your profile.
If your whereabouts or similar information are sensitive, particularly if it’s a safety issue, you should be very aware of locations on your posts — no check-ins — and be careful about writing posts that give clues about where you are. 

Users should also remember that they can also always block specific users from seeing their Facebook page or from contacting them, but this is more of a reactive step than a proactive one. Plus, just as you could alter your name (yes, in violation of Facebook’s guidelines) to hide your identity, so could anyone who is looking for you.

If you’re concerned about past posts, Facebook has a setting that lets you limit the audience for posts and information that are already on your profile. You can also go to the “Activity Log” on your timeline to get an action-by-action view of how your activity shows up on the site.

And finally, as Facebook itself makes clear, remember that “things you hide from your timeline still appear in news feed, search and other places on Facebook.” There include some things you just can’t hide, namely profile pictures and cover photos, but also some news feed activity.
There’s been much discussion over how much social networks should expect users to fine-tune their settings in order to hit the levels of privacy that they want. Facebook has been evolving its settings to be more granular — which can be good for thinking about privacy at a more real-time pace. But it also means that it requires those for whom privacy is a major concern to set broader controls.

Google to Encrypt ALL Keyword Searches: Say Goodbye to Keyword Data


grinds-my-gears-encrypted-searchWarning: This isn't one of those happy news updates that opens up new doors for your marketing -- like Facebook announcing embedded posts. Nope -- this is one that's going to actually close some doors for you. And like Peter Griffin says, it's really going to grind your gears. Yesterday, Search Engine Land reported that Google has made a change aimed at encrypting all search activity -- except for clicks on ads.
When approached by Search Engine Land, Google reportedly confirmed the switch, saying the following:
"We added SSL encryption for our signed-in search users in 2011, as well as searches from the Chrome omnibox earlier this year. We’re now working to bring this extra protection to more users who are not signed in."
This means marketers won't even be able to get keyword data for searches conducted by users who aren't even signed in. (Cue marketers everywhere raising their fists in fits of rage.)
Why, Google ... Why?!
So Google says, the reason for the switch is to provide “extra protection” for searchers. Search Engine Land, however, suspects that Google may also be attempting to block NSA spying activity -- since Google was accused of giving the National Security Agency access to its search data back in June (which it has strongly denied). We also can't help but think that, because Google is encrypting search activity for everything but ad clicks, this is a move to get more people using Google AdWords.

What All This Means 

Okay ... so what does all this mean to you, the marketer? First, here's a quick recap of how we got here ...
You may recall that back in October 2011, Google (citing the reason of privacy), announced it would start encrypting search results for logged-in Google users (including any Google-owned product like YouTube, Google+, Gmail, etc.). This meant that marketers were no longer able to identify which keywords a person who was logged into Google.com searched for before they arrived at your website -- even if they were using a web or marketing analytics platform like HubSpot. And without these keyword insights, marketers would have a much tougher time knowing which keywords to target to achieve greater visibility in search. No bueno.
While Google initially said this would impact less than 10% of all searches conducted, we quickly noticed that percentage rise. In November 2011, we analyzed the keywords of HubSpot's customers to find that more than 11% of organic search traffic was being affected, and by January of this year, we'd found that for the HubSpot website specifically, about 55% of the organic search we got each month was encrypted (and we’d seen that percentage steadily rising by about 4 percentage points each month). Things appeared to be getting more serious.

And other webmasters have been reporting a similar lack of insight. Not Provided Count, which tracks 60 sites to chart the rise of the keyword "(not provided)," has been reporting on the effects of encrypted keywords over time. In the chart below, you'll notice a spike starting around the week of September 4. Today, the chart indicates that nearly 74% of search terms are being encrypted.

Just like we predicted earlier this year, with Google encrypting all keyword data, this means marketers will not just lose some of their Google keyword insights -- they'll lose all of them. While there are still a lot of unanswered questions that Google has yet to address (for instance, when will we lose all this data?), there's still a lot of cause for concern for marketers. How will we know how searchers are finding our websites? How will this affect our content strategies?

So What's a Marketer to Do?

Truthfully, it's hard to say. In terms of preventing Google from making this change, there's likely nothing you can do. We asked a few SEO experts to weigh in on the situation:

"While secure searches may seem frustrating to many SEO marketers, this is actually a great move for our industry. Great SEO today is great content with powerful digital endorsements from relevant and authoritative websites, which results in business results that transcend the keyword conversation.
 
"SEO marketers need to be focused on raising organic traffic as a whole, achieving business objectives like online sales and lead generation, growing branded communities, and earning brand mentions. This move by Google will force SEO marketers to focus on business results rather than keywords -- which is where the focus should be anyway."

Larry Kim, Founder & CTO, WordStream:

"Since SEO-optimized content is generally themed content around a specific topic, you can still track the SEO performance of all of your URL’s. I’d argue that tracking organic content at a page level, rather than an individual keyword level, makes a lot more sense given the recent increases in keyword ranking volatility.
 
"It’s worth noting that the keyword "(not provided)" issue only impacts organic searches. If your company engages in PPC marketing, you can still access a treasure trove of valuable search query data by linking your company’s AdWords account with your Google Analytics account and use that data for future keyword research projects."

Andy Pitre, HubSpot Analytics Product Manager:

"As marketers ourselves, we aren’t too happy about these recent developments. We love having access to as much data as possible, and we love using that data to help create better experiences for our visitors, prospects, and customers. Google’s decision to withhold keyword data undoubtedly makes our jobs as marketers a little bit harder.
 
"But as marketers, we are also accustomed to living in a world where we frequently only have access to incomplete information. A big part of our jobs is to interpret that incomplete data and make the best decisions we can. Search is now one of those places where we only have access to a small part of the story. Our decision-making process in this area will have to adapt to these new circumstances, but it won’t stop us from reaching the customers who are searching for our products and services."

What You Can Do

That being said, you shouldn't feel completely left in the dark about how search affects your marketing strategy. Here are some ways you can still measure and use search data:
  • It is still possible to tell how much traffic your website is getting from organic search. Although you might not know the exact keywords, you can still correlate the work you do to optimize your site and create content to increases or decreases in organic search.
  • Other search engines like Bing and Yahoo continue to pass along keyword data. According to comScore, at present, Google.com has about 67% of search market share, Bing has 18%, and Yahoo has 11%. Although this will not provide the full picture, analytics tools like HubSpot can continue to show keywords for the 33% of searches that come from search engines like Bing, Yahoo, AOL, Ask.com, etc. This data will give marketers at least some indication of which keywords are the most useful.
  • If you use Google AdWords for pay-per-click marketing, connect your company’s AdWords account to your Google Analytics account and use that data for keyword research, as Larry Kim of Wordstream suggests.
  • Rank will continue to play a role in helping measure the results of search engine optimization and content creation.

I Love Internet Marketing Through Social Media!






What can I say? I love social media! I love Internet Marketing! That's how I make my living. I pay my bills and bank money that flows in from all the sites that I'm listed on.  People always ask me how it's possible to make an extra income online. I always respond with this:

Making Money Online is easy. It's just time consuming at first, but if one sticks with it, the end result is worth the hard effort. It takes persistence, resilience, and mental fortitude. It takes branding one self, sharing knowledge with others that help benefit them!

The process is repetitive most times. I've taken steps to make things much simpler through automating many of my posts through Facebook, Twitter, Google+, etc...otherwise it would take up much of my day. With a little bit of study, anybody could do the same.

The 5 Pillars of New Media Strategy: There is no box!



While you may read success story after success story, we cannot make any great assumptions in how they’ll impact your work.

There is a great myth that a winning formula exists for success in social media; that if you deconstruct the most popular case studies, you’ll find a winning recipe for your social media strategy.
It’s easy to get caught up in the creative examples we read about. Many times however, they feed the very impressions that can work against you.

- If we can introduce the right viral content we can get more views or friends.

- If we can maintain a rhythmic editorial calendar we can spark conversations that create a social effect.

- If we can develop the most amazing app, we can rise to the top of our customer’s attention span!

- If we get our company in social networks, we can build better relationships with our customers.

Rather than seeking shortcuts, we should see these examples as inspiration. In the end however, we each have our own question we need to answer…what do successful relationships and experiences look like in social media for our customers?

The formula for success in social media begins with first defining what success is and how it will be measured. This is one of the most important steps in any social media strategy, yet it is the first step that many businesses miss. The truth is that there is no formula for success. It requires something special for each strategy and it’s dependent on the people you’re trying to reach, their expectations, your business objectives and how this engagement ties specifically to your organization (sales, marketing, service, products, etc.)


To help, let’s put social media strategy into an approachable framework. Begin by organizing the most important themes to form what I refer to as The 5 Pillars of Social Media Strategy. This will contribute to a meaningful social media presence as long as you revisit this approach through every step of the strategy process.

1. Listen, Search, Walk a “Daily in the Life” of your customers.

Research is critical in understanding how your connected consumer makes decisions, how they’re influenced and where they engage and learn. This is the dynamic customer journey. Here, you’ll learn that your social customers are not at all like the traditional customers you know. Please note that they’re still important, but a new approach is required to expand your reach. Essentially here you discover new touch points and decision-making cycles. You’ll learn that this isn’t just about social media at all. In fact you’ll see how social, mobile, digital and other traditional channels need to work together to guide a complementary, integrated and converged journey. Think of it as customer journey optimization (CJO) or customer journey management (CJM).

2: Rethink your Vision, Mission, and Purpose.

When’s the last time you read your company’s vision or mission statements? Did it or does it speak to you? Would you Tweet it? Take this time to redesign customer experiences and articulate your vision for how you will use social media to improve customer experiences now and over time.

3. Define Your Brand Persona

Take some time to answer the following questions…What do you want people to see and appreciate? What do you want customers to hear, see, think and feel? Who are they engaging with? What do you stand for? Defining your brand persona will humanize engagement and make takeaway impressions and value consistent across every network and in every scenario.

4. Develop a Social Business Strategy.

Make your presence matter. This isn’t just about concepting the next Facebook Like or Twitter Retweet campaign. Based on the first 3 steps, develop a business-level strategy that meets the needs and expectations of your connected customers. As you’ll learn in step 1, new touch points emerge. If you are not part of the awareness stage of the decision making cycle, you will not benefit from consideration nor a decision in your favor. They key is to also tie social media back to key business objectives while investing in the necessary roles to engage customers at the functional level (service/support, sales, marketing, collaboration/innovation, etc.)

5. Build and Invest in Your Community.

Don’t just think about social media as an editorial or marketing program. That’s just table stakes.  In fact, don’t just limit this to social media at all. This is a chance to rethink the entire engagement strategy and the customer journey. Ultimately, you’re setting the stage for something more meaningful and substantive…the experience. Community isn’t defined by Likes or followers. Those are essentially “in the moment” actions. We’re talking about human beings. Community is much more than belonging to something; it’s about doing something together that makes belonging matter. Participate in the communities that you host and also the communities that host the conversations that are important to your business. That’s the secret to earning a lasting affinity the contributes to you becoming a trusted resource.

By repeating steps one through five over time will help you achieve empathy, which will inspire meaningful strategies to earn relevance.  It’s important to remember is that in social media, mobile, and in the face of innovation, there is no box to think outside of. In fact, there is no box. There is only a blank slate and a series of unanswered questions that separate you from your connected customers.
